Tlos

One of the oldest cities of Lycia, mentioned in 14th-century BC Hittite records as 'Dalawa'. A cluster of rock-cut tombs is carved into the cliff below an Ottoman-era fortress — the famous Tomb of Bellerophon shows the hero on Pegasus slaying the Chimaera in relief. Also surviving: a Roman bath complex, theatre and stadium. Day-trip from the trail start at Fethiye or a half-day detour from Yaka.

History

Settled since the Bronze Age, Tlos ranked among the six principal cities of the Lycian League, casting the maximum three votes, and prospered through Roman and Byzantine rule as a bishopric that was never wholly abandoned. In the early 19th century the Ottoman feudal lord Kanlı Ali Ağa rebuilt the acropolis fortress as his winter residence, giving the summit its present outline. Charles Fellows recorded the ruins in 1838, and systematic excavation by a Turkish team has continued since 2005.

Myth & legend

Tlos was said to be home to Bellerophon, the slayer of the Chimaera. Local guides will point to the carved relief on the tomb facade.

Geology

Tlos crowns a limestone crag where the western wall of the Akdağ massif — at over 3,000 m the highest ground in Lycia — drops to the Eşen (Xanthos) valley. The crag belongs to the Mesozoic carbonate stack of the western Taurus, while the plain at its feet is built of river-laid silts and gravels stripped from the surrounding karst mountains.

Wildlife & nature

The acropolis cliff drops to the fertile Eşen valley, where plane and oleander line the streams below the fields. Rock nuthatches and crag martins work the crags, bee-eaters and hoopoes hunt the open ground in spring, and red pine, carob and wild olive climb the slopes behind.

The view

The tomb-riddled acropolis crag rises from the Eşen valley with the Akdağ massif behind; late-afternoon sun warms the cliff face while spring snow lingers on the 3,000 m skyline.

Photography

Shoot the stacked cliff tombs and Ottoman fortress from the stadium terrace in golden hour; the two-storey bath windows make natural frames for the valley far below.

When to visit

March to May brings green terraces, orchids and snow still on Akdağ; September and October give softer light and fewer groups; July and August are fierce, so arrive early.

Getting there

Dolmuş from Fethiye towards Saklıkent and Seydikemer pass the Tlos turn on the main road; the final climb to the site is steep, so many visitors take a taxi for the last stretch.

Where to stay

Village pansiyons and rural guesthouses cluster around Yaka and the Saklıkent road; Fethiye offers the full range of town hotels within an easy drive.

Food & water

No reliable source within the ruins — carry water from Fethiye; the spring-fed village of Yaka below the site is the nearest dependable place to refill.

Safety

The fortress path is steep with loose stone, and several tomb ledges are unfenced — keep children close. Full sun over the stadium and baths; carry water. In an emergency dial 112.

Accessibility

Steep, loose paths climb the acropolis and tomb cliff, and terraces are unfenced; the lower theatre and baths sit on gentler rough ground, but no part of the site suits wheels.

Visitor tips

Combine Tlos with Saklıkent Gorge in one outing; view the Bellerophon tomb relief from below rather than scrambling, and come in spring for snow on the Akdağ backdrop.

You're standing in Tlos. One of the oldest cities in Lycia. Birthplace of the hero Bellerophon, who rode Pegasus and killed the Chimaera at Olympos at the eastern end of this trail. And the place that — three thousand years before you arrived — the Hittites already had a name for.

Tlos sits high on this hill above the Xanthos River valley, with the Akdağ massif rising behind it. Lycian tradition placed the city's founding in legendary time — but archaeology backs the antiquity. Hittite clay tablets from the fourteenth century BC mention a city called Tlawa, and the consensus among modern scholars is that they meant this place. Tlos may be the longest continuously inhabited city in Lycia.

By the classical era, Tlos was one of the six leading cities of the Lycian Federation, alongside Xanthos, Patara, Olympos, Myra, and Pinara — three votes in the federal assembly, a stadium, a theatre, two large bath complexes, and a powerful family tomb cluster cut into the cliff below the acropolis. The Romans loved Tlos for its strategic position commanding the valley. The Byzantines made it a bishopric. The Ottomans repurposed the acropolis as a fortress. And in the nineteenth century, a notorious brigand named Kanlı Ali Ağa — "Bloody Ali" — held it as his stronghold, defying the Sultan's troops for over a decade.

Five things to find. The site stretches up the hillside; take your time on the climb.

First, the Bellerophon Tomb. Carved into the cliff face below the acropolis, with a stone relief above the entrance showing a horseman on Pegasus, his spear raised, facing the Chimaera below. This is one of the most famous pieces of Lycian art. The hero you're looking at killed the monster at Olympos — and then, according to Lycian tradition, came home to be buried here. If you walked the Olympos guide already, this is where his story ends.

Second, the acropolis. Climb the path past the necropolis to the top of the hill. The walls you'll see are layered — Lycian masonry at the base, Roman blockwork above, Byzantine and Ottoman patches on top. The view from the summit, across the Xanthos valley to the snow-streaked mountains, is the same view the Hittites would have seen.

Third, the theatre. At the foot of the acropolis. Roman, well-preserved, with stage building still partially standing. Look at the back wall of the stage — you can read inscriptions in Greek naming the donors who paid for the construction.

Fourth, the stadium. Sometimes called the largest in Lycia. Long enough for the ancient foot races, and lined with stone seating. Walk its length — it takes longer than you'd think.

And fifth, the two bath complexes. The "Seven Doors" bath, with its row of arched windows looking out over the valley, is the most photographed building on the site. The second bath, smaller, sits closer to the agora. Both are Roman, both unusually intact.

Bellerophon. The young hero from Tlos who, according to Homer, was sent by the king of Lycia to kill the fire-breathing Chimaera that ravaged the eastern coast. He did it — riding the winged horse Pegasus, climbing above the monster's flames, driving a leaden spear into its throat. The Lycians honoured him as the hero who saved their land.

Then he grew proud. He tried to ride Pegasus up to the home of the gods themselves, to take his place among them. Zeus sent a gadfly that stung the horse. Bellerophon was thrown from Pegasus and fell, broken, back to earth. He spent the rest of his life wandering Lycia, alone, blind in one eye and lame in one leg, looking for the homeland that had once loved him. They say he eventually returned here, to Tlos. They say his tomb is the one you'll see in the cliff. They say he died still believing he deserved better.

Even heroes, the Lycians liked to remind themselves, fall.

Tlos is a side trip from the Lycian Way proper. To rejoin the main trail, return to Saklıkent — the great gorge ten kilometres south — or descend west to Patara and the coast. If you're walking the trail east, Olympos waits at the far end, fifteen days' walk from here. If you've already been to Olympos, you've completed Bellerophon's circle. Walk safe.

Tlos: Die Stadt Bellerophons

Bonne route.

Tlos: la città di Bellerofonte

Siete a Tlos.

In secondo luogo, l'acropoli.

Romano, ben conservato, l'edificio scenico ancora parzialmente in piedi.

Buon cammino.

Tlos — Sesli Rehber

Tlos'tasınız. Likya'nın en eski kentlerinden birinde. Kanatlı at Pegasus'a binip bu yolun doğu ucundaki Olympos'ta Khimaira'yı öldüren kahraman Bellerophon'un memleketinde.

Romalılar vadiyi tutan konumu için Tlos'a değer verdi.

Bellerophon. Homeros'a göre Likya kralının, doğu kıyıyı kasıp kavuran alev soluklu Khimaira'yı öldürmeye gönderdiği Tloslu genç kahraman. Öldürdü de — kanatlı at Pegasus'un sırtında canavarın alevlerinin üstüne çıkıp kurşundan mızrağı boğazına sapladı. Likyalılar onu, yurtlarını kurtaran kahraman olarak onurlandırdı.

Sonra kibre kapıldı. Pegasus'la tanrıların katına, aralarına oturmaya çıkmak istedi. Zeus bir at sineği gönderdi; sinek atı soktu.

Common questions

How old is Tlos?

Tlos dates from the Lycian / Roman / Ottoman period.

How do I get to Tlos?

Dolmuş from Fethiye towards Saklıkent and Seydikemer pass the Tlos turn on the main road; the final climb to the site is steep, so many visitors take a taxi for the last stretch.

Is Tlos accessible?

Steep, loose paths climb the acropolis and tomb cliff, and terraces are unfenced; the lower theatre and baths sit on gentler rough ground, but no part of the site suits wheels.

When is the best time to visit Tlos?

March to May brings green terraces, orchids and snow still on Akdağ; September and October give softer light and fewer groups; July and August are fierce, so arrive early.

Is there food and water at Tlos?

No reliable source within the ruins — carry water from Fethiye; the spring-fed village of Yaka below the site is the nearest dependable place to refill.

Where can I stay near Tlos?

Village pansiyons and rural guesthouses cluster around Yaka and the Saklıkent road; Fethiye offers the full range of town hotels within an easy drive.

What should I know before visiting Tlos?

Combine Tlos with Saklıkent Gorge in one outing; view the Bellerophon tomb relief from below rather than scrambling, and come in spring for snow on the Akdağ backdrop.

Is Tlos safe to visit?

The fortress path is steep with loose stone, and several tomb ledges are unfenced — keep children close. Full sun over the stadium and baths; carry water. In an emergency dial 112.
