Content Policy & Reporting

Last updated: April 2026

LycianWay hosts content created by our users ("user-generated content" or "UGC") in several places: the Trail Feed, Stories, Community Forum, Reviews of agencies/accommodations/guides, Trail Tags, profile photos & bios, Buddy Finder, and the Lost & Found board. This policy explains what is allowed, what is not, and how to report content that breaks the rules.

1. Your content, your responsibility

You retain ownership of the content you post. By posting it to LycianWay you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licensable licence to host, display, distribute, translate, moderate, and adapt it for the purpose of operating the LycianWay service, and to use extracts for marketing (with attribution where practical). You can end this licence by deleting the content or your account — see Delete Account.

You confirm you have the right to post the content — that you own it, or have the owner's permission, and that sharing it does not breach anyone's privacy or other rights.

2. What is allowed

  • Honest accounts of your hiking experience on the Lycian Way
  • Honest reviews of providers based on a real booking or interaction
  • Photos you took, or photos you have permission to share
  • Trail observations (e.g. "waymark missing at km 7", "water tap dry in June")
  • Respectful questions, tips, warnings, and logistical help for other hikers
  • Constructive criticism of a provider where your experience justifies it
  • Lost-and-found posts with enough detail to be useful but not so much it identifies a stranger

3. What is NOT allowed

Absolutely prohibited — will be removed, may result in account suspension or law-enforcement referral:

  • Illegal content — CSAM, incitement to violence, terrorism, hate speech against protected groups (Equality Act 2010)
  • Harassment and targeted abuse — including doxxing, threats, bullying, or coordinated pile-ons
  • Non-consensual private content — identifying photos of strangers, recordings without consent, intimate images without consent
  • Defamation — false statements of fact that damage a person's or business's reputation
  • Copyright and trademark infringement
  • Spam, scams, fraudulent listings, phishing links
  • Fake reviews — reviews by someone who did not book or use the service, reviews solicited in exchange for money/benefits, competitor-posted reviews
  • Dangerous misinformation — knowingly false information that could cause hikers to be injured (e.g. falsely claiming a water source exists in a section)
  • Personal data of third parties — phone numbers, addresses, vehicle plates, faces identifiable to the public
  • Malware and exploit code
  • Impersonation — claiming to be LycianWay staff, a provider, or another user

4. How we moderate

LycianWay uses a combination of automated filtering and human moderation:

  • Pre-publication: reviews of agencies and accommodation are queued for manual moderation before going live.
  • Post-publication: Trail Feed, Stories, Forum posts, and Lost & Found publish immediately but can be removed on report or automated flagging.
  • Outcomes: we may remove the content, add a label (e.g. "flagged"), limit its distribution, or suspend the poster. Repeat violations lead to permanent bans.

We do not pre-screen every post. We act on reports and on our own discretion. We reserve the right to remove anything that breaches this policy or our Terms of Service.

5. How to report content

If you see content that breaks this policy, please tell us.

Report email: report@lycianway.co.uk

Please include: the URL or in-app location of the content, a description of what's wrong, and your relationship to it (victim, observer, rights-holder).

If your report concerns illegal content (CSAM, terrorism, imminent threats), please also report directly to the relevant authority — we will cooperate fully with UK and foreign law enforcement.

Urgent safety reports (a hiker in danger) should go to emergency services first (112 in Türkiye) and secondarily to safety@lycianway.co.uk.

6. Notice-and-takedown procedure (copyright & trademark)

LycianWay operates under the hosting defence set out in UK regulation 19 of the Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 — we are not generally liable for content posted by users until we have actual knowledge of illegal content and fail to act promptly.

To notify us of infringing content, send a written notice to abuse@lycianway.co.uk including:

  1. Your full name, postal address, email, and telephone number.
  2. Identification of the work you claim has been infringed (with ownership evidence where practical).
  3. The URL or precise in-app location of the allegedly infringing content.
  4. A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorised.
  5. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and that you are (or are authorised to act for) the rights holder.
  6. Your physical or electronic signature.

We aim to respond within 5 working days. Valid notices will usually result in the content being removed or restricted; the poster may be notified and given a chance to submit a counter-notice. Repeated submitters of false notices will be blocked.

7. Right of appeal

If we remove your content and you believe the removal was wrong, reply to the removal email or write to appeals@lycianway.co.uk within 30 days. Include your reasons. A different moderator will review. You will receive a reasoned response within 10 working days.

For potentially defamatory claims removed under Section 5 of the Defamation Act 2013, the poster has 7 days to respond to the notice and have LycianWay pass their contact details to the complainant; we follow the statutory procedure.

8. Transparency

We aim to publish an annual transparency report from 2027 onwards: number of reports received, takedowns performed, appeals upheld, and law-enforcement requests complied with. Individual user data will never be published.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced via in-app banner or email.
